Polycom Broadens Telepresence Applications

A Pleasanton, Calif.-based provider of telepresence, video and voice communication solutions, announced it has expanded its line of telepresence offerings.

Polycom, Inc. today launched Polycom Architected Telepresence Experience 300, a telepresence kit that blends technology components and software that, when combined with planning, design and implementation services from qualified AV integrator partners, create customized solutions for a range of industries and applications.

The system, as shown below, can be used to build immersive telepresence environments featuring displays, furniture, lighting, acoustics, décor and more. Organizations can use Polycom (News - Alert) ATX solutions with existing video conferencing systems, Polycom said. An estimated 2 million standards-based video conferencing and telepresence systems are in use by companies today.

For example, AVI-SPL (News - Alert) can better meet customers’ needs using Polycom ATX solutions.

"Customers have really embraced the concept of an immersive video communications experience, but increasingly want their own variation of a telepresence solution," Michael Brandofino (News - Alert), executive vice president, video and unified communications, AVI-SPL, in a statement. "Polycom has been the quickest to respond to that need with the Polycom ATX solution, which enables us to create solutions tailored for each customer. Coupled with ConferencePoin, our comprehensive managed video services, we are able to support our customers' video communication needs from the desktop to the Polycom ATX immersive telepresence room."

The opportunities telepresence offers are limitless, Youssef Saleh, vice president and general manager, telepresence and vertical solutions, Polycom, said. The ability for people to see each other and share information and content instantly across distances is useful in any industry, he said.

"With the ability to customize telepresence for specific business needs, Polycom and its certified partners are helping customers create exciting new applications that are transforming how they operate and expanding what is possible in their businesses," Saleh said.

In the enterprise market, the Polycom ATX can be used in research and development fields to help companies boost time-to-market for new products by connecting global teams and by strengthening collaboration with partners, company officials said. In the manufacturing world, telepresence can be used to let people in other locations see and examine products as they come off the line in real time.

The Polycom ATX 300 solutions build on Polycom’s broader portfolio of immersive, room and personal telepresence solutions, the company said. They also support the firm’s infrastructure, management and video recording, streaming and content management solutions that allow comprehensive, business-wide visual communication, officials said.

Polycom, a top provider of telepresence solutions shipped nearly 70,000 telepresence solutions through September. The company has the top market share for the total installed video communication market at 41 percent, according to Wainhouse (News - Alert) Research.
