Avaya, Cisco, Nortel and Alcatel-Lucent Top Four UC Vendors

While many tech markets were predicted to have a protracted plunge after the market crashed just over a year ago, several segments are showing signs of a rebound.

In fact, the unified communications market grew 3 percent in the second quarter of this year, the first quarter of growth since the third quarter of 2008 as reported by The Dell’Oro Group, a firm that reports on market information about the networking and telecommunications industries. The firm announced today that the top four UC vendors based on second quarter revenues were Avaya, Cisco, Nortel and Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert).

“Although many customers are delaying spending, we have begun to see a faster turnaround in purchases of IP equipment than their older-TDM counterparts,” said Alan Weckel, director at Redwood City, Calif.-based Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group. “Over the short term, we believe many customers are extending the life of their PBXs with software upgrades to call control in order to reduce budget outflows,” Weckel added.

The report also indicated that PBX (News - Alert) line shipments in North America improved during the second quarter over the prior quarter’s historic decline, while shipments to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and Asia Pacific declined sequentially due to downward pressure from the weakened economy.

In other market news, research firm In-Stat’s (News - Alert) report, “Mobile VoIP Transforming the Future of Wireless Voice,” predicts that by 2013, mobile VoIP applications will generate annual revenues of $32.2 billion, driven by more than 278 million registered users worldwide.

“Applications such as Skype and Vonage have influenced users to think of voice as a data application,” said In-Stat analyst Frank Dickson in a press release. “The increasing penetration of Wi-Fi in mobile devices was the beach head that Mobile VoIP applications needed. As user habits are being shaped by rich on-line communication experiences, mobile carriers control over devices and data applications is waning. Mobile carrier attempts to slow the spread of on-line Mobile VoIP are proving challenging as well.”

For those businesses invested in unified communications, TMC’s (News - Alert) Marisa Torrieri recently reported that the chances are dual-mode mobile smartphones are of interest. These smartphones work 100 percent wirelessly for both voice conversations and messaging over Wi-Fi or cellular platforms.
