There is scarcely a better place to capture the news of the latest happenings in the telecommunications space than to go where the action is and talk to those in the thick of it. TMCnet did just that at Telx's CBX 2010 in New York.

One of the companies offering insight into their current opportunities is RCN (News - Alert) Metro.
Philippe Alvarez, President of RCN Metro stopped by to talk briefly with TMCnet's Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) in an interview captured in this video.

RCN Metro is a facilities-based provider of services and high availability, high bandwidth networks for critical apps, catering to companies that need custom solutions. RCN Metro customers are looking for the soft wrapper that has to do with pre-sale and support, as well as the flexibility to deal with dynamics of the financial market.

As for what is driving the company's success, RCN Metro is 100 percent facilities based and fiber based. The company has a large number of locations. In addition, they were one of the early adopters of Ethernet - which was the best thing they ever did, according to Alvarez.

Financial services has been one of the biggest buyers of Ethernet services. Why? "Latency," said Alvarez. "We have one of the best metro distribution networks for Ethernet in both Chicago and New York, as well as Boston. So, they buy for latency and they also buy because they have been a client of ours since back in 2001-02 and we understand the dynamics of the industry."

When asked about Extreme Network, Alvarez noted it is acceding expectations sales wise. It is expanding, even before the initial network was lit. This success has caused the company to start looking at other locations for expansion. As a result, a very robust, ultra-low latency network expansion will be taking place.

As for other industries emerging, Alvarez noted that 1/3 of RCN Metro's business is from the financial services, market, 1/3 from wireless carriers and another 1/3 from wireline carriers. A small sliver is everything else and this is where the growth is for the company. They have seen significant growth in health care as automation is a focus, as well as data requirements in real time.
